    5th Annual Aged to Perfection

Aged to Perfection Kicked Up a Notch

Whose cuisine reigns supreme? That question will be answered at this year's Aged to Perfection Wine Tasting and Silent Auction on Thursday, May 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Holly Creek community in Centennial. To celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Christian Living Communities (CLC) event, this year's fundraiser will include a LIVE cooking competition a la "Iron Chef" featuring four CLC executive chefs.

The chefs will lead four teams as they prepare an appetizer, entrée and dessert - each to include the same secret ingredient. The 70-minute competition culminates with one chef being crowned "Best of the Best" and the opportunity to purchase the winning chef's amazing services for a personally catered dinner for eight!

Now is your chance to be part of the action. We have four openings for foodies craving a hands-on experience. Four top bidders in our e-mail auction will join our executive chefs that evening in the competition kitchen and will receive their own personalized chef's coat.

Or, put your refined palate to the test as one of four guest judges. Judges will taste all four teams' creations and collectively decide which chef team will receive the "Best of the Best" award.

A simple email will get you in the action. The email bidding for these special opportunities begins at 8 a.m. March 15 and runs through 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 24. Simply email Olivia Mayer, Development Associate, at omayer@clcmail.org with your bid or call 720-974-3675.

Opening bids start at $75 to be a Guest Chef or $50 to be a Guest Judge. All bidders will be notified by email once the auction is closed.

Individual reservations for Aged to Perfection are $35 per person. Proceeds from the event benefit the finishing TOUCHES at Clermont Park campaign - helping to provide the furnishings, accessories and small equipment to make the redeveloped community a home. For more information, call 720.974.3558.

    Demolition at Clermont Park

Nearly 75 people gathered on a crisp, cold morning to watch as a portion of the existing skilled nursing building at Christian Living Communities Clermont Park was demolished Nov. 16 to create room for the new Suites at Clermont Park, near Colorado Boulevard and Yale Avenue. The demolition marked the next phase of the redevelopment of the community, formerly known as University Hills. It was the first senior care community opened by CLC, a Denver-based not-for-profit that owns and operates three metro-Denver retirement communities as well as Adult Day and Home Care Services.

Popular certified nursing assistant Dedy, 31, climbed into the cab to take the ceremonial first swipe at the building, much to the delight of his 2-year-old daughter who exclaimed "Papa broke - papa hole." Dedy, who has been with CLC for eight years and works in the rehabilitation department at the community, won a drawing to see who would get to perform the honors.

The original, 1972 structure is being torn down to make way for a new, two-story, 64-suite skilled nursing neighborhood and the initial phase of a new Town Center, home to a community living room, library, game room, and the University Marketplace featuring a coffeehouse and casual dining. The new Suites at Clermont Park is anticipated to be completed by late 2010.

The construction project is part of an extensive redevelopment of the entire community that began mid 2008 and is being funded in part with $30 million in non-rated, fixed-interest bonds. Earlier this year, 32 newly renovated assisted living apartments, including memory support, were unveiled.

So as not to displace residents from their homes throughout the project, construction and demolition efforts have been phased. Once the redevelopment is complete, Clermont Park will be a continuing care retirement community, offering multiple levels of services and care under the same roof.

Lantz-Boggio Architects and Pinkard Construction are overseeing design and construction.

16th Annual Earthen Vessel Dinner - Cherished Traditions ... Tomorrow's Treasures

More than 450 guests honored a faithful volunteer, enjoyed a nod to our Dutch heritage as well as celebrated our treasures of tomorrow with Disney star Dean Jones at our October dinner. The event raised more than $75,000 for our Finishing Touches at Clermont Park campaign, which provides the furnishings and equipment for the common areas of the redeveloped community.

Following a sumptuous dinner, special guest Jones entertained the audience with a few stories from his Hollywood days, saying he had no intention of acting initially but was interested in a singing career when he landed his first acting job. He also told of growing up in Alabama and his turn to Christianity. Jones, of The Love Bug and That Darn Cat, went on to star in more than 40 films, five Broadway shows and spent more than 20 years in television.

The evening culminated with the presentation of the Earthen Vessel Award to Duane Sjaardema, a Denver resident and long-time volunteer for CLC where he has served on the Board of Directors and continually helps at The Village as a faithful driver and trip companion. Several of Duane's children and grandchildren along with his wife, Vi, were on hand for the evening, which celebrated Duane's wonderful, giving spirit.

    Gift Ideas for Senior Adults

If you know someone who lives in a senior care community, gift ideas may be a challenge. Here are some suggestions for activities and gifts that would be very much appreciated and treasured.

    Activities

    • The best gift you can give is yourself. Reminisce about the happy times you've shared together..
    • A scenic drive - even close by!
    • A leisurely stroll though a favorite place; use a wheelchair if needed.
    • Enjoy a favorite movie DVD with them.
    • Play a favorite game.
    • Attend a church service together.
    • If family members will not be able to visit during an occasion that is special to a loved one, contact the staff at the community to let them know. Arrangements will gladly be made for some special visits by staff and volunteers. It is our pleasure to assist you.
    Gift ideas
    • A photo album filled with pictures of past fun activities. A digital picture frame with lots of family pictures. A talking frame with a recorded voice of a grandchild and their picture inside, this will be played many times.
    • Enable them to stay in touch with family by having birthday cards all ready for them to send with only their signature needed. Address, stamp and label the cards with the day they should be sent to reach the birthday person. Seniors love to stay in touch with family but may not be able to shop for the cards. Giving this gift of allowing them to stay in touch family and friends is priceless.
    • Homemade gifts, especially the handiwork of a young child
    • A personal reminisce/life memory book or box filled with contributions from all the family members if possible. List a memory or two that you shared with this resident.
    • Lotions, creams or favorite scent.
    • Non- skid slippers and socks, pajamas or a bathrobe.
    • A new pillow, linens or comforter
    • Soft lap blanket
    • Coupons to use at the beauty shop or coupons for manicures
    • Jigsaw puzzles - there are several with larger pieces that make assembly easier.
    • A large print edition of a best seller they would enjoy.
    • A family autographed sweatshirt.
    • Gift basket filled with socks, lip balm, lotions, word puzzles, tasty snacks or favorite candy. If they are on a restricted diet please check with the nurse for acceptable items.
    • Large print calendar with all the birthdays and special family celebration dates marked for them to see.
    • Low vision seniors may also enjoy magnifiers or an adjustable reading lamp.
